The Committee for Communication Access was created to advocate for the needs and concerns of hard of hearing New Mexico consumers and its membership is drawn from hard of hearing residents throughout the state.

We are currently compaigning for revisions to certain New Mexico rules and regulations applicable to the needs of those consumers. Legislation is being drafted that would mandate that, before the sale and dispensing of hearing aids or other hearing instruments to any client of a hearing care provider in the state, the client be counseled by that provider in the technology available to the client that will provide a direct connection between hearing aid(s) or cochlear implant(s) and the assistive listening system in any public venue that is required under the 2010 revised terms of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).

The ADA specifically mandates that all new or significantly upgraded assistive listening systems be compatible with the telecoils in hearing aids and cochlear implants.

Laws mandating such counseling already exist in five other states and the proposed legislation has the support of individuals, local and national hearing loss support groups and others.
